Despite reports linking him with a €117 million move to Manchester United, Emmanuel Petit has suggested that Paul Pogba is not yet a big enough star to command such a fee.
Highly-rated across the continent, the 23-year-old Juventus midfielder endured a troublesome Euro 2016 campaign for hosts France, as he struggled to meet the weight of expectation placed upon him.
And after witnessing his performances for club and country over the past few years, fellow countryman Petit has slated the proposed sum changing hands between the two sides for Pogba.
“They say £100m…..it is a waste of money for me,” Petit said in an interview with Yahoo Sport. “Pogba has a great future, but this move is too early for him. I don’t like the situation around him all the time. We are making him out to be a big star, but he is not a big star to me.
“He hasn’t reached the level of the Champions League yet or the level with the national team. I am pretty sure he can do it, but this is too early for him.”
Petit, himself, experienced a glittering career in which he won the World Cup in 1998 and Euro 2000 with Les Bleus. However, the former Arsenal midfielder has questioned the media’s portrayal of a player he believes is not yet worthy of such praise.

“People talk about him all the time in the press, but I haven’t seen it yet. For the moment, I am not really convinced," continued Petit.
“If Real Madrid wanted this player, they would put the money on the table, but they don’t want to fight with Man United for Pogba. There is a reason for that.”
Since joining the Bianconeri from the Red Devils back in 2012, Pogba has chipped in with 34 goals and 43 assists in 178 appearances.
